Chapter 2 - THE PAGE SHE REFUSED

Laura set the pen down.

“I need my own lawyer.”

Ethan leaned back.

“You don’t need to make this uglier.”

“It’s already ugly.”

Emma whispered:

“Dad said you’d do this.”

Laura looked at her.

“What did he say?”

“That you’d pretend the money wasn’t yours.”

Ethan stayed silent.

Smart.

Let Emma do the hurting.

Laura turned back to him.

“You showed a child financial records she doesn’t understand.”

“She understands enough.”

Emma’s face hardened.

“You controlled everything.”

Laura froze.

“What?”

“My school. Dad’s doctors. When I could see him after surgeries. Everything.”

“You were eleven.”

The second the words left Laura’s mouth, she knew they were wrong.

Emma folded her arms.

“Exactly.”

Ethan stood.

“You think helping us gave you permanent authority.”

“I kept this family alive.”

“And now I’m alive.”

That landed.

Ethan told her to leave the house that night.

Laura went upstairs to collect personal files.

In the office, she searched for Emma’s original trust appointment order.

Missing.

Instead she found an envelope hidden behind a drawer.

Inside was a copy of Emma’s trust with one clause highlighted.

If Laura resigned or was removed as co-fiduciary, Ethan gained temporary sole control until a replacement was appointed.

In the margin, Charles Mercer had written:

Need her resignation before Emma turns fifteen.

Emma’s birthday was six weeks away.

Laura stared at the sentence.

Why did fifteen matter?

She turned the page.

At fifteen, Emma’s trust could begin investing in family-owned businesses.

And without Laura, Ethan could approve those investments himself.

The divorce was not simply about ending a marriage.

Ethan needed a six-week window.

And he had been preparing for it months before Laura knew there was a war.
