Chapter 5 - THE VIDEO EMMA FORGOT
Laura remembered Emma’s school project.
At eleven, Emma recorded daily life for a class assignment called My Family Changes.
Laura had bought her a camera.
Emma filmed everything.
Meals.
Homework.
Therapy.
Random hallways.
Maybe she had accidentally recorded Ethan.
That night, an anonymous cloud link arrived.
User:
EBENNETT14.
Emma.
The first video showed the old rehabilitation house.
Ethan entered the hallway.
Walking.
No cane.
No wheelchair.
Five slow steps.
Then Charles Mercer appeared.
Ethan whispered:
“Not while she’s home.”
Charles said:
“She’s at Emma’s school.”
The clip ended.
Laura stopped breathing.
Date:
More than two years earlier.
Naomi replayed it.
“This doesn’t prove he faked paralysis.”
“I know.”
His injury was real.
Recovery was complicated.
But he had hidden progress.
A second video appeared.
Ethan:
“The court review is in six months.”
Charles:
“Then keep the official plan unchanged.”
Ethan:
“Laura can’t know I’m this far ahead. She’ll start handing decisions back.”
Laura stared.

He had deliberately allowed her to remain responsible after he could reclaim more authority.
Then Ethan’s phone call came.
His voice was calm.
“If you contact Emma again without permission, I’ll seek a protective order.”
“Did she send me the videos?”
“She made a mistake.”
Laura’s throat tightened.
“Is she safe?”
“She’s my daughter.”
“That wasn’t my question.”
Silence.
Then Ethan hung up.
Seconds later the cloud folder disappeared.
But Naomi had already downloaded the files.
And in the final frame of the second video, Charles was holding a red folder.
