Chapter 7 - THE LIABILITY
The video was dated eighteen months earlier.
Ethan stood in the hallway without support.
Charles beside him.
Ethan said:
“Once I’m back on my feet, Laura becomes the liability.”
Charles answered:
“Only if Emma still trusts her.”
Emma stopped the video.
Her face went white.
Laura did not touch her.
Did not say I told you.
Marissa said quietly:
“This proves planning. It does not prove every motive.”
Emma looked angry.
“What else is there?”
Laura answered:
“Your father may believe his fund is good for you and still manipulate you to get it.”
Emma looked at her.
“People can love you and use you?”
“Yes.”
That was the hardest truth in the room.
Another video showed Charles discussing LB Care Services.
“Laura signs the expense summaries anyway.”
Ethan replied:
“She never reads the attachments.”
Laura closed her eyes.
True.
She had trusted them.
Then another clip changed everything.
Charles:
“What about the crash settlement audit?”
Ethan’s face hardened.
“Leave the crash alone.”
“If Laura finds the pre-accident amendment—”
“She won’t.”
The room went silent.
Naomi searched the records.
No pre-accident amendment appeared in their current file.
Whatever it was, Ethan had feared Laura finding it.
Then Charles filed a new emergency motion arguing Laura’s suspicions proved she was emotionally biased.
The court moved the hearing forward.
Next morning.
And Ethan planned to testify that Laura had turned caregiving into control.
As they prepared to leave, Emma looked at Laura.
For the first time in months, one word slipped out.
“Mom…”
