Chapter 12 - THE MAN IN THE GRAY COAT
The man in the dealership image was Thomas Reed.
A former business partner of Ethan’s father.
Thomas had left Bennett family companies after a bitter ownership dispute.
According to Ethan, Thomas once threatened to destroy the family financially.
“What does that have to do with your crash?” Naomi asked.
Ethan looked at Emma.
Then away.
“Thomas owned part of the rehabilitation hospital.”
The same hospital.
Again.
He sold his stake one month after Ethan’s accident.
At a steep discount.
Buyer:
Margaret Bennett.
Laura stared.
“So your crash changed the hospital’s ownership.”
Ethan nodded.
“But that doesn’t mean Thomas caused it.”
Correct.
Then Naomi found another connection.
Before the accident, Thomas had been negotiating to sell his hospital stake to an outside healthcare group.
If that sale closed, Margaret could not acquire control.
After Ethan became a long-term rehabilitation patient, the hospital faced bad publicity, insurance pressure, and a liquidity crisis.
Thomas sold cheaply.
Margaret bought.
Coincidence?
Maybe.
Then investigators located Thomas.
He agreed to speak through counsel.
His statement shocked everyone.
“I changed the maintenance classification.”
Ethan went rigid.
“Why?”
Thomas answered:
“To keep the car on the road.”
“Why?”
“I needed Ethan at the lender meeting.”
No murder plan.
No staged crash.
Business pressure.
Recklessness.
Then Thomas added:
“The accident was never supposed to hurt Ethan.”
Laura froze.
“What does that mean?”
Thomas hesitated.
His lawyer whispered to him.
Then:
“Because Ethan wasn’t supposed to be driving.”
Silence.
“Who was?” Naomi asked.
Thomas looked toward Emma.
No.
Laura felt cold.
Thomas answered:
“Rachel.”
Emma’s biological mother.
But Rachel had supposedly died two years before Ethan’s crash.
Emma stared at him.
“My mom was dead.”
Thomas closed his eyes.
