Charles did not disappear.
He called Naomi.
“I want to cooperate.”
His first sentence was strange.
“I never planned Ethan’s crash.”
Naomi replied:
“Then why start there?”
Charles admitted the pre-accident amendment was real and originally legitimate.
Ethan feared a lender crisis and wanted Laura able to manage if something happened.
Then the accident changed everything.
Ethan discovered that disability gave him cover.
Creditors stopped pressing him.
Laura handled difficult decisions.
The family assumed he was helpless.
When recovery accelerated, Ethan hid some progress.
Charles helped.
“Why?”
“We thought he needed time to rebuild control.”
Then the rehabilitation fund came later.
Charles insisted the business was real.
Laura asked:
“Did you label legitimate expenses so Emma would think I stole them?”
Silence.
“I didn’t stop Ethan from using the records that way.”
Cowardice.
Then Naomi traced the property Ethan’s fund planned to buy.
It was the rehabilitation hospital where Ethan spent his first year after the crash.
Purchase price:
$38 million.
Current appraisal:
$27 million.
And Emma’s trust already owned twenty-five percent through another entity.
Laura stared.
“They’re using Emma’s money to buy something she partly owns.”
“Yes.”
“Who owns the other seventy-five percent?”
Charles hesitated.
Then answered.
“Margaret Bennett.”
Ethan’s mother.
The woman who had barely visited during his paralysis.
The fund would transfer millions from Emma’s trust to her grandmother while paying Ethan and Charles management fees.
Then Charles added:
“Margaret is the reason Ethan thought Laura had to be removed.”
Laura’s stomach tightened.
