The case resolved before Emily had to take the stand.
That mattered to Michael.
Rebecca accepted a plea including:
unlawful confinement,
coercion,
evidence tampering,
and fraud-related conduct.
Grant accepted a more serious package including:
conspiracy,
fraud,
evidence destruction,
and child-abuse-related charges.
Their sentences reflected different roles.
Michael did not demand maximum punishment publicly.
He demanded:
no unsupervised contact,
full restitution,
preservation of Emily’s trust,
and permanent prohibition on Grant billing any service tied to Emily.
Then victim-impact material from Emily was submitted through a child specialist.
Emily was asked what scared her most.
Not the cage.
She said:
“When they told me Dad would go to jail if I told anybody.”
That surprised Michael.
Then:
“What did you think would happen?”
Emily answered:
“I thought everybody would disappear.”
Lauren already had.
That was the hidden wound Grant and Rebecca exploited.
Loss.
They made every choice feel like another funeral waiting to happen.
If Emily resisted:
Dad goes to jail.
If she told police:
Aunt Rebecca goes to jail.
If she mentioned the bags:
everyone loses everything.
A ten-year-old was made responsible for holding adults together.

One sentence:
I thought if I told the truth, nobody would believe me because grown-ups had papers.
Michael read it and had to leave the courtroom.
That was the damage.
Not only the cage.
Paper had become more powerful than her voice.
The court ordered future trust decisions to include independent child advocacy and direct provider verification.
No family member could bill the trust for guardianship-related services without court review.
