Chapter 14 - THE POOL DRAINED CLEAN

The Hayes house was sold after legal proceedings and financial collapse.
Before sale, the pool was drained and cleaned.
Emily asked to see it.
Michael said no immediately.
Then stopped.
Old instinct:
protect by deciding.
He asked:
“Why?”
Emily said:
“I want to see it empty.”
Therapist approved if supervised.
So they went.
No Rebecca.
No Grant.
Just Michael, Emily, and Dr. Lane, her therapist.
The pool looked smaller.
Blue bottom.
Cracked tile near one corner.
No black bags.
Emily stood at the edge.
Michael stayed two steps behind.
She asked:
“Was there ever anyone in those bags?”
“No.”
“I knew there wasn’t.”
He frowned.
“Then why were you so scared?”
Emily looked at him.
“Because Grant said if you saw them, you’d go to jail.”
Michael closed his eyes.
Another lie built around fear.
Then Emily said:
“I thought the computers had videos that made you bad.”
“They had videos of me being angry.”
“Are you bad?”
Michael thought.
“No.”
Then:
“I’ve done bad things.”
She looked at him.
“Like the wall.”
“Yes.”
“Would you do it now?”
“No.”
Emily nodded.
Then looked at the empty pool.
“Okay.”
That was all.
No dramatic forgiveness.

Just scale restored.
A pool was a pool again.
