Chapter 7 - THE DOG CAGE

Why the cage?

Not punishment at first.

The Hayes family owned a large dog years earlier.

The cage remained in the shed.

When Emily refused to record another statement, she tried to run out the side gate.

Grant caught her.

Rebecca shouted:

“You’re not leaving until you understand what’s happening.”

Emily screamed that she wanted her father.

Then Grant placed her in the cage “for ten minutes” to stop her running while they argued about what to do.

Rebecca did not object immediately.

That fact became one of the hardest for her to explain later.

She stood ten feet away.

Emily screamed.

Grant said:

“She needs to calm down.”

Rebecca answered:

“She’ll hurt herself running.”

That sentence became permission.

Ten minutes.

Then Emily spat at Grant.

He walked away.

Rebecca said:

“Apologize.”

Emily refused.

Twenty minutes.

Then an hour.

At some point, the cage stopped being a pause and became a rule.

When Rebecca later told police:

“I never intended to imprison her,”

Detective Lewis answered:

“Intent can change after the first minute.”

Then Grant placed her in the cage “for ten minutes” to stop her running while they argued about what to do.

Ten minutes became an hour.

Then overnight.

Because once they let her out, Emily said she would call police.

Rebecca panicked.

The cage became confinement.

They gave her water.

Some food.

Then less.

Not because they planned starvation.

Because every meal became negotiation.

“Tell the truth about Michael.”

“I am.”

“Then say it on camera.”

“No.”

Then no dinner.

Control escalated.

By the time Michael arrived, Emily had been in and out of the cage for nearly two days.

That was enough.

Then why the tarp?

Grant said privacy.

Rebecca said rain.

Emily said:

“They didn’t want the neighbor to see.”

A neighbor confirmed hearing crying once.

Rebecca told her Emily was having a behavioral episode.

Again:

story first.

Then Emily explained the pool.

She saw Grant carrying black bags outside the night before Michael arrived.

Rebecca shouted:

“Get rid of all of it.”

Grant dropped one bag.

A laptop fell partly out.

Emily recognized it.

The laptop used for her forced videos.

Then Grant put the bags into the pool.

Emily understood:

They were getting rid of proof.

That was why she screamed “don’t look.”

Not because she knew bodies were there.

Because Grant told her:

“If anyone finds those bags, your dad goes to jail too.”

May you like

A lie.

But Emily believed it.
