Chapter 11 - THE BROTHER VANESSA FINALLY HAD TO FACE

Before plea negotiations finalized, Vanessa requested a restorative conference with Ethan.

Ethan said no.

Then thought for a week.

Said yes.

Not alone.

Mediator.

Attorneys aware.

Michael not inside.

Vanessa entered in plain clothes.

No styled hair.

No performance?

Ethan did not trust that assumption.

She sat.

“Hi.”

He said nothing.

Then Vanessa began:

“I’m sorry.”

Ethan waited.

“For hiring them.”

Waited.

“For letting Dad think you were lying.”

Waited.

“For using CPS to turn everything upside down.”

Better.

Then Ethan asked:

“Why me?”

Vanessa looked at her hands.

“Because you kept records.”

“That’s it?”

“No.”

She looked up.

“Because Dad believed you could survive anything.”

Ethan frowned.

“What does that have to do with you?”

“He worried about me. He trusted you.”

Ethan almost laughed.

“He didn’t trust me at the hospital.”

“I knew how to change that.”

There.

Vanessa continued:

“You had the thing I wanted.”

“What?”

“Being believed without performing.”

Ethan stared.

He had never thought he possessed that.

Then she said:

“I hated that you could say no to Dad and still be the good kid.”

Ethan said:

“I wasn’t the good kid.”

“You were the easy one.”

There.

Same family wound from another direction.

Michael expected Ethan to absorb difficulty.

Vanessa learned difficulty brought attention.

Then Ethan asked:

“Did you want them to hurt me badly?”

“No.”

“Do you expect me to care?”

Vanessa cried.

Maybe real.

“I told them not to.”

“You still sent them.”

“Yes.”

Good.

No minimization.

Then he asked the hardest question.

“Were you ever actually afraid of Dad?”

Vanessa paused.

“Yes.”

Ethan looked at her.

“Because he hit you?”

“No.”

“Because?”

“Because when he finally got angry, I thought he’d stop loving me.”

Ethan’s face changed.

That was not abuse.

It was attachment fear.

Still real.

Vanessa had turned emotional fear into a factual allegation of danger.

Then Ethan said:

“You made him look like a monster because you were afraid he’d stop rescuing you.”

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.”

That was the first complete sentence of accountability.

Then she asked:

“Do you forgive me?”

Ethan answered:

“No.”

Vanessa nodded.

Good.

He stood.

Then stopped.

“Maybe someday.”

May you like

He hated that he added it.

Still true.
