Chapter 9 - THE CASE VANESSA BUILT AGAINST HERSELF
Vanessa did not collapse after arrest.
She changed strategy.
She admitted hiring Kyle and Jacob.
But claimed she only wanted them to scare Ethan because she believed he was illegally accessing her financial records and threatening to expose private medical information.
No medical information existed.
Then she admitted falsifying some trust receipts.
Called it borrowing against future distributions.
She planned to repay after age twenty-five.
Classic.
Then the CPS report.
She maintained parts.
Michael was intimidating.
He did favor Ethan’s independence.
He did use money to pressure her.
He did grab her hard enough to bruise.
All true to degree.
This mattered at plea negotiation.
Vanessa was not a fictional monster who woke wanting evil.
She was a young adult who learned that emotional performance got results, family guilt covered mistakes, and every rescue delayed consequences.
Then debt grew.
Trust restrictions blocked more money.
Ethan found records.
She panicked.
And instead of admitting fraud, she built a bigger lie.
Then prosecutors found motive for the attack beyond trust money.
A bank investigator had contacted Michael about duplicate trust reimbursements.
Michael had scheduled a meeting for Wednesday.
The attack happened Tuesday.
Vanessa knew.
If Ethan accused her while Michael already suspected money issues, she risked exposure.
So she wanted Ethan discredited first.
Then CPS allegations created a possible trustee conflict.
If Michael lost control, bank could approve emergency distribution.
She hoped to access enough money to repay suspicious amounts before audit.
There.
Not pure greed.
Cover-up.
One more fix before discovery.
Then Michael asked the trust bank:
“Would you actually have given her forty-eight thousand?”
The bank officer said:
“Maybe a limited amount for safe housing, with documentation.”
Vanessa probably overestimated how much freedom the allegation would buy.
That was common in bad schemes.
Then Ethan learned something from prosecutors.
