Chapter 8 - THE MONEY UNDER THE MATTRESS

Police found the cash by accident.
Not in Vanessa’s room.
At her friend Brooke’s apartment.
Vanessa had been staying there since the hospital.
Brooke called police after discovering a sealed envelope under a guest-room mattress.
Inside:
$12,600.
Vanessa said it was savings.
No records.
Then bills matched ATM withdrawals from trust-funded accounts.
Not all.
Enough.
The bank traced some suspicious distributions into Vanessa’s personal account, then cash withdrawals.
Total unexplained:
about $36,000.
Where did the rest go?
Clothes.
Travel.
Debt payments.
Attacker payment maybe.
Then Brooke gave police another item.
A second phone.
Vanessa had asked her to hide it.
There it was.
Messages with Kyle and Jacob.
Direct.
VANESSA:
HE NEEDS TO BE SCARED ENOUGH TO STOP DIGGING.
KYLE:
NO HOSPITAL.
VANESSA:
OBVIOUSLY.
Then:
VANESSA:
DAD COMES HOME 5ISH. BE GONE.
Michael had come home early at 4:40.
That ruined timing.
Then another thread.
Vanessa to Brooke:
IF ETHAN FREAKS OUT AND DAD TAKES MY SIDE, CPS WILL SEE EXACTLY WHAT I’VE BEEN SAYING.
Brooke:
THIS IS INSANE.
Vanessa:
NO. THIS IS HOW I GET OUT.
There.
Plan.
Then one more.
Brooke:
OUT OF WHAT?
Vanessa:
THE TRUST.
Meaning?
Out from under Michael’s control.
Not escaping abuse necessarily.
Escaping trustee restrictions.
Then Vanessa was arrested on charges related to conspiracy, assault solicitation, fraud, and falsified trust documentation.
Michael sat in the police station parking lot for twenty minutes.
Ethan asked:
“You okay?”
“No.”
Good.
At least honest.
Then Vanessa called him from custody.
Michael answered.
Ethan wanted him not to.
But watched.
Vanessa cried.
“Dad.”
Michael closed his eyes.
“You paid them.”
“No.”
“They found the phone.”
“Brooke is lying.”
“Vanessa.”
“Dad, please.”
He started crying.
She continued:
“You know Ethan hates me.”
Michael looked at his son.
Then something changed.
Not hatred.
Boundary.
“I know what the messages say.”
Silence.
Vanessa’s voice became smaller.
“Are you choosing him?”
Michael answered:
“I’m choosing evidence.”

The line hurt all three of them.
Because Michael should have done that years earlier.
