Chapter 2 - THE MEN IN THE BEDROOM

The attack happened on a Tuesday.

Michael was supposed to be at work until seven.

Vanessa said she had a study meeting.

Ethan came home at four-thirty.

The house was quiet.

He dropped his backpack in the kitchen.

Went upstairs.

His bedroom door was closed.

He opened it.

Two men charged him.

No warning.

One grabbed his hoodie.

The other punched him in the ribs.

Ethan screamed.

“STOP! WHO ARE YOU?!”

He crashed against the wall.

The room blurred.

One attacker hit him again.

The other shoved him to the floor.

Ethan covered his face.

Then he saw her.

Vanessa.

Standing in the doorway.

Not surprised.

Not scared.

Watching.

Ethan froze.

The men did not.

One kicked his backpack aside.

Then footsteps sounded downstairs.

Michael.

He had come home early.

Vanessa’s face changed instantly.

Terror.

Tears.

Voice.

“DAD! HELP! THEY’RE KILLING ETHAN!”

The two attackers ran.

One pushed past Vanessa.

Michael came up the stairs just as they disappeared down the back hall.

He found Ethan on the floor.

Vanessa sobbing.

“Call 911!”

Michael did.

At the hospital, Ethan had bruised ribs, a split lip, and a mild concussion.

No severe injuries.

Enough pain.

Enough fear.

Michael sat beside the bed.

Vanessa stood behind him.

Ethan grabbed his father’s hand.

“Dad. Vanessa sent them.”

Michael’s face changed.

Not belief.

Pain.

“Ethan.”

“She was there.”

“I know.”

“She was watching.”

“Stop.”

“She sent them!”

Michael shook his head.

“She’s your sister. Stop lying.”

Ethan stared.

Shattered.

Behind Michael, Vanessa looked directly at him.

Tiny smile.

Cold.

Then her face changed again.

She trembled.

“Dad… he hates me.”

Michael turned.

“No, sweetheart.”

Ethan clenched his fists.

“Look at her!”

Michael looked back.

Vanessa was crying now.

Perfectly.

Then the hospital door opened.

A woman entered carrying a folder.

Professional outfit.

Badge clipped at her waist.

“Michael Carter?”

He stood.

“Yes?”

“I’m Dana Mitchell with Child Protective Services.”

Michael frowned.

“CPS? Why are you here?”

Vanessa’s eyes widened.

Then she burst into tears.

She ran toward Dana.

“Please help me!”

Michael froze.

Vanessa pointed at him with shaking hands.

“I’ve been terrified of him for years!”

Ethan slowly turned toward her.

Horrified.

Vanessa buried her face in her hands.

“He always told me nobody would believe me!”

Michael’s face collapsed.

Dana Mitchell did not react dramatically.

Good investigators rarely did.

She looked from Vanessa to Michael.

Then to Ethan.

“Everyone is going to speak separately.”

Vanessa’s crying intensified.

Michael whispered:

“What are you doing?”

Vanessa looked at him through tears.

And Ethan finally understood.

The attack was not the whole plan.

It was the opening move.
