Chapter 5 - THE TRUST VANESSA WANTED BEFORE SHE TURNED TWENTY-FIVE
Laura Carter’s trust was simple by wealthy-family standards.
Education.
Medical expenses.
Reasonable housing support.
Michael served as family trustee.
A bank served as co-trustee.
Vanessa could not take large discretionary distributions without Michael’s approval until twenty-five.
Unless:
Michael was unavailable,
incapacitated,
or had a conflict.
An abuse allegation created conflict.
If CPS substantiated enough concern, the bank could temporarily bypass Michael and approve independent housing funds.
Vanessa had researched this.
That was the first important discovery.
Browser history on her college laptop—not her phone—showed searches:
trustee conflict abuse allegation
family trust emergency housing
remove parent trustee
CPS report adult sibling minor child
Dates:
six weeks before attack.
Michael stared at the report.
“No.”
Ethan looked at him.
“Dad.”
“No.”
He covered his face.
“She planned this.”
Maybe.
But Dana Mitchell warned them.
“Research is not proof the abuse report is false.”
True.
Vanessa might have been afraid and researching options.
Then another search:
how long CPS keeps parent away from child
Again.
Could be fear.
Could be strategy.
Then the attackers.
Kyle Mercer was arrested first after police found security footage showing his car near the Carter house.
He denied assault.
Then admitted being there.
Why?
“Vanessa asked us to scare Ethan.”
Michael stopped breathing.
Kyle continued:
“She said he was stealing from her.”
Ethan stared.
“What?”
Kyle said Vanessa claimed Ethan had hacked her accounts and threatened to tell their father she was using drugs.
No drugs found.
Then money.
Vanessa paid $900 cash.
Where did she get it?
Kyle said:
“Envelope.”
No source.
Jacob Ross confirmed part.
He said Vanessa told them:
“Don’t seriously hurt him.”
That mattered.
She commissioned violence.
But not severe injury.
Still serious.
Then why?
Kyle said:
“She wanted her dad to see Ethan losing it.”
That made no sense.
Until investigators reconstructed the plan.
Vanessa expected Ethan to accuse her.
Michael would disbelieve him.
The attack would destabilize the house.
Then CPS report would land.
If Ethan appeared angry and Michael defended Vanessa, each reaction could be used in different directions.
Chaos.
Conflicting stories.
And while everyone fought, Vanessa sought trust money and perhaps more.
Then Detective Hill asked Kyle:
“Did Vanessa say why she wanted Ethan scared?”
Kyle hesitated.
“She said he found papers.”
What papers?
Trust statements.
And one bank printout.
Ethan remembered.
Vanessa had opened his drawer.
She knew he had records.
What did they show?
Nothing criminal.
Yet.
Then Ethan remembered one document he had photographed months earlier because the amount looked strange.
A trust reimbursement request.
$18,400.
Purpose:
housing deposit and education costs for Vanessa.
Approved by Michael.
But Vanessa had still been living in college housing already paid through scholarship assistance.
Where did the $18,400 go?
Michael stared.
“I approved that.”
“Why?”
“She gave me invoices.”
Were they real?
Not all.
Vanessa had already been taking money from the trust using false expenses.
