Chapter 4 - NATHAN'S HELP

Nathan arrived at the hospital an hour later.
He looked horrified.
“Dad did what?”
Rachel watched him carefully.
“He chased the kids into the woods.”
Nathan sat.
“Jesus.”
Then Rachel held up the pill organizer.
“Who filled this?”
Nathan frowned.
“I don’t know.”
“Dad says sometimes you do.”
“Sometimes.”
“Did you this week?”
“No.”
“Last week?”
“Maybe Sunday.”
Rachel stared.
“Maybe?”
Nathan snapped:
“I’m not a nurse.”
“No. You’re the one handling his finances.”
“That has nothing to do with pills.”
Maybe.
Then Nathan shifted.
“Rachel, Dad’s been off for weeks.”
“What does that mean?”
“Repeating himself. Forgetting calls. Getting paranoid.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Nathan laughed bitterly.
“You work sixty hours a week.”
“And you decided that meant I didn’t need to know?”
“I handled it.”
There.
The Morgan family word.
Handled.
Rachel hated it.
Then Nathan added:
“He signed some property papers last month. He was completely clear then.”
Rachel’s attention sharpened.
“What property papers?”
May you like
Nathan’s face changed.
Too late.
