Chapter 11 - THE FATHER'S DEFENSE
Michael did not panic when shown the forged signature.
He smiled.
“That’s not mine.”
“Forensics disagree.”
“Preliminary forensics.”
Daniel hated how calm he was.
Michael leaned forward.
“You’ve already decided I’m the villain.”
“You forced medicine into your daughter’s mouth.”
“Yes.”
Daniel stopped.
Michael had admitted it.
“Why?”
“To keep her symptoms consistent.”
Daniel stared.
Michael continued.
“My mother told me the trust review would collapse if the medical records contradicted each other.”
“You drugged Olivia for money.”
“For the trust.”
“That is money.”
“No.”
Michael’s voice sharpened.
“That trust belongs to the girls.”
“You were trying to unlock it.”
“Yes.”
“For Eleanor’s debt.”
“No.”
“For what?”
Michael looked exhausted.
“To keep Laura from taking them.”
Daniel frowned.
Michael explained.
Laura had been preparing to move to Oregon with the twins.
She wanted to use trust funds for a private school and housing.
Michael discovered the plan.
He believed the court would favor Laura because he worked long hours and had a temper.
So he needed leverage.
If Olivia had a documented medical condition requiring specialized local care, moving her across state lines would become harder.
Daniel stared.
“You made your daughter sick to stop your wife from moving.”
Michael’s face twisted.
“I made symptoms appear.”
“Listen to yourself.”
Michael looked away.
For the first time, shame appeared.
Then vanished.
“Laura was going to take them.”
“So you hurt Olivia.”
“I didn’t think it would hurt her.”
“That is not a defense.”
“I know.”
Daniel leaned closer.
“Then why keep fighting?”
Michael met his eyes.
“Because Laura did it too.”
“This isn’t a competition.”
“No. It’s custody.”
There it was.
Everything came back to possession.
Then Michael gave Daniel another piece.
He claimed Eleanor never wanted the trust money.
“She wanted control.”
“Same thing.”
“No.”
Michael shook his head.
“She’s already rich.”
“Then why?”
“Because my father changed the trust before he died.”
Robert Carter had inserted a hidden clause.
If either twin ever became the victim of financial exploitation by a parent or trustee, an independent audit would trigger.
If wrongdoing was proven, control shifted permanently away from the family.
Eleanor had spent years trying to prevent that clause from activating.
Daniel understood.
She was not trying to steal the trust.
She was trying to keep the family from losing it.
And to do that, she had covered up the very misconduct that would trigger the clause.
Family loyalty had become corruption.
Then Michael said:
“You want to know why my mother helped hide Laura?”
Daniel waited.
“Because Laura found the audit letter.”
“What audit letter?”
