Chapter 14 - THE COURT OF FAMILY

The DNA test confirmed it.

Daniel Reed was Emma’s biological father.

Michael Carter was Olivia’s.

The twins had different biological fathers.

The news detonated through every custody proceeding.

But the judge refused to turn biology into an instant answer.

Daniel was not automatically Emma’s parent in practice.

Michael remained her legal father until the court determined otherwise.

Laura faced charges.

Michael faced charges.

Eleanor faced charges related to trust concealment and obstruction.

Rachel petitioned for temporary guardianship of both girls.

Daniel did not.

That surprised everyone.

Eleanor confronted him outside court.

“You’re giving up your daughter?”

Daniel stared at her.

“No.”

“Then why not fight?”

“Because she is seven.”

“So?”

“So she needs stability more than I need to win.”

Eleanor laughed bitterly.

“You sound noble.”

“No.”

Daniel looked through the courtroom doors.

“I’m trying not to make the same mistake all of you made.”

“What mistake?”

“Confusing love with possession.”

Eleanor went silent.

Inside court, Michael’s attorney made a strong argument.

Michael had confessed to drugging Olivia.

But Laura had also administered medication.

Eleanor had manipulated evidence.

Daniel had a personal conflict.

Rachel had a disciplinary history.

No adult was clean.

The judge appointed an independent guardian ad litem.

Then Emma asked to speak.

The courtroom became quiet.

She stood beside Olivia.

“I don’t want to choose.”

The judge leaned forward.

“You don’t have to.”

Emma looked at Michael.

Then Laura.

Then Daniel.

“They all keep saying they love us.”

Olivia held her hand.

Emma continued.

“But when grown-ups fight about who owns us, Olivia gets sick.”

No one moved.

The judge asked:

“What do you want?”

Emma looked at Rachel.

“To stay with Aunt Rachel.”

Rachel covered her mouth.

“And your parents?”

“I want to see Mom if Olivia says okay.”

Laura cried.

“And your father?”

Emma looked at Michael.

Then Daniel.

The room held its breath.

“I have two.”

Michael closed his eyes.

Emma continued:

“But neither gets to make Olivia scared.”

Daniel felt tears rise.

The judge ordered temporary guardianship to Rachel.

Michael did not object.

That surprised Daniel.

Then Michael stood.

“I have something.”

His lawyer whispered urgently.

Michael ignored him.

He handed the court clerk a flash drive.

“My mother’s camera footage.”

Eleanor went pale.

Daniel stared.

“You had the memory card?”

Michael nodded.

“Since the night Laura disappeared.”

“Why keep it?”

“Insurance.”

Of course.

The footage showed Laura in the hidden room.

It showed Michael locking the hatch.

It showed Eleanor watching.

It showed something else.

Eleanor opening the hatch later.

Not to free Laura.

To hand her documents.

And saying:

“Sign away your custody rights, and this ends tonight.”

The courtroom erupted.

Eleanor had not merely covered up Michael’s abuse.

She had tried to use it to force Laura out of the family.

The judge looked at Eleanor.

For the first time, Eleanor had no answer.
