Chapter 12 - EMMA'S NAME

The audit letter was hidden in a safe-deposit box.
Robert Carter’s attorney, Samuel Grant, had written it before his death.
Daniel read it in silence.
The trust was not divided equally.
Emma was the primary successor beneficiary.
Olivia had a smaller medical subtrust.
Why?
Because Robert had doubts about Emma’s paternity.
Daniel looked up.
Samuel explained.
“Robert believed Emma might not be Michael’s biological daughter.”
Daniel felt the room tilt.
“Who was the father?”
Samuel did not know.
Laura had become pregnant shortly before marrying Michael.
The twins were born together, but a rare biological circumstance could allow different fathers.
Robert had ordered private testing.
The results were sealed.
Michael never saw them.
Eleanor did.
Daniel asked:
“Why does that matter to the trust?”
Samuel sighed.
“Robert believed Michael would reject Emma if he knew.”
So he protected her financially.
He made Emma primary successor beneficiary because he feared she might one day lose Michael’s legal support.
Daniel thought of Emma dragging Olivia through the rain.
The child everyone saw as the protector.
She had unknowingly been the center of the inheritance plan all along.
Then Samuel handed him a second document.
Eleanor had petitioned privately to unseal the DNA results six months earlier.
Why?
Samuel did not know.
Daniel confronted Eleanor.
She finally lost her composure.
“Because Michael was going to find out anyway.”
“How?”
“Laura threatened to tell him.”
“Why?”
“To get custody.”
Daniel stared.
“She was going to tell Michael Emma wasn’t his?”
“Yes.”
“Did Laura know who the father was?”
Eleanor’s mouth tightened.
“Yes.”
“Who?”
She refused.
Daniel pressed.
“Who?”
Eleanor leaned forward.
“You.”
Daniel stopped breathing.
He had known Laura in college.
One summer.
One night.
Then she moved away.
He had never known she was pregnant.
Daniel stood abruptly.
Eleanor watched him.
“Now you understand.”
“No.”
“You understand why I kept it buried.”
“You had no right.”
“I had every right to protect that child.”
“By helping Michael terrorize her mother?”
Eleanor’s face cracked.
“I was trying to prevent him from learning Emma wasn’t his.”
“And Olivia?”
Silence.
Daniel’s anger rose.
“You protected Emma by sacrificing Olivia.”
Eleanor whispered:
“I thought I could control Michael.”
Daniel stared at her.
“That’s what everyone in this family keeps saying.”
Then his phone rang.
The hospital.

Olivia had collapsed again.
And this time, Michael was nowhere near her.
