Chapter 4 - THE MISSING WOMAN

The accusation changed everything.

Daniel separated Michael from the girls.

Paramedics took Olivia to the hospital.

Michael arrived with an attorney before the first blood test came back.

His lawyer, Steven Hale, was calm, gray-haired, and expensive.

He did not argue emotionally.

He attacked procedure.

“You have a frightened seven-year-old repeating statements about events she may not understand.”

Daniel stared at him.

“She brought us a syringe with medication prescribed to her father.”

Steven nodded.

“And Mr. Carter freely admits the syringe is his.”

Daniel frowned.

Michael spoke.

“I take medication for a heart rhythm condition.”

“Did you give it to Olivia?”

“No.”

Emma, sitting across the room with a child advocate, shouted:

“Yes, you did!”

Michael did not look at her.

That was deliberate.

He kept his attention on Daniel.

“My wife used my medication to create symptoms in Olivia.”

“Why?”

“To make me look abusive.”

“Then she disappeared?”

Michael swallowed.

“She ran.”

“Why leave the girls?”

His face tightened.

“Because she knew she was going to be arrested.”

Daniel watched carefully.

Michael had answers.

Not frantic answers.

Prepared ones.

“Did you report her missing?”

“Yes.”

The report existed.

Laura Carter had been missing for sixty-eight days.

Michael had filed the report himself.

He said she emptied a bank account and fled after threatening to take the twins.

Police had found no evidence of foul play.

Then Olivia’s bloodwork returned.

Repeated exposure.

The medication had been in her system more than once.

Daniel looked at Michael.

Michael looked back.

His face showed concern.

Not fear.

“See?” Michael said quietly. “This has been happening for weeks.”

Daniel almost laughed.

“You were the one at home with her.”

“And before Laura disappeared?”

Daniel said nothing.

Steven Hale leaned forward.

“My client is not asking you to believe him. He is asking you to investigate both possibilities.”

It was smart.

Reasonable.

And infuriating.

That night, police searched the Carter house.

They found no locked room in the garage.

No restraints.

No Laura.

Only a storage closet with a mattress.

Michael explained:

“Laura slept there sometimes after arguments.”

Daniel found scratches on the inside of the door.

Steven said:

“Old wood.”

In Michael’s office, police found Laura’s passport.

Michael said:

“She left by car.”

They found Laura’s phone.

Michael said:

“She bought another.”

They found a torn family photograph.

Michael said:

“She tore it.”

Every piece of evidence had an alternative explanation.

Then Emma tugged Daniel’s sleeve.

“The floor.”

“What floor?”

“In the garage.”

Emma pointed.

“Daddy put a rug over the door.”

Daniel returned to the garage.

He moved a heavy workbench.

Then rolled back an industrial mat.

Beneath it was a metal hatch.

Michael’s face changed.

May you like

Only for one second.

But Daniel saw it.
