Chapter 7 - THE GRANDMOTHER'S CASE
Eleanor listened to the recording without reacting.
Daniel expected denial.
Instead, she said:
“Laura was afraid of me.”
“Why?”
“Because I knew what she had done.”
“With the trust?”
“Yes.”
“Three million dollars?”
“Not exactly.”
Eleanor explained that Laura had discovered an old clause in the trust.
If one twin developed a qualifying chronic disability, a medical reserve account could be unlocked for long-term care.
Up to four million dollars.
Daniel felt his stomach turn.
“You’re saying Laura wanted Olivia diagnosed.”
“I’m saying someone did.”
“Michael?”
“Perhaps.”
“You?”
“No.”
“Laura?”
Eleanor leaned back.
“She knew the clause existed.”
That was not an answer.
Daniel asked:
“Who first requested the medical evaluation?”
“Laura.”
Daniel checked.
True.
Three months before disappearing, Laura scheduled Olivia with a specialist.
But the doctor’s notes showed Laura expressing concern about unexplained weakness.
That could be a mother seeking help.
Or someone creating a record.
The problem was exactly what Eleanor wanted it to be:
uncertain.
Meanwhile, Michael was charged with child endangerment based on witness statements and toxicology.
His lawyer fought bail restrictions.
Michael did something unexpected.
He agreed not to seek custody.
Daniel read the filing twice.
Why would a controlling father voluntarily step back?
Then Steven Hale requested Eleanor be named temporary guardian.
Daniel understood.
Michael was moving the girls toward his mother.
Emma refused.
“She scares me.”
“Why?”
“She asks questions.”
“What kind?”
“About Mommy.”
Daniel crouched.
“What does she ask?”
“What Mommy told us. What Mommy hid. If Mommy ever gave Olivia medicine.”
Daniel frowned.
“Did she?”
Emma shook her head.
Then stopped.
“Maybe.”
Daniel waited.
Emma whispered:
“One time.”
His heart sank.
“What happened?”
“Mom said it was vitamins.”
“Did Olivia get sick?”
Emma looked at her sister.
“Yes.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Laura had administered something too.
That evening, he reopened Laura’s missing-person file.
One overlooked detail stood out.
A traffic camera captured Laura’s car the night she disappeared.
She was not driving.
