Chapter 11 - MELISSA'S CHOICE
Melissa finally admitted what she did.
Not all at once.
She had received two prior incident reports involving Lila and Madison.
She called Andrew both times before formal meetings.
She told him:
“Lila is sensitive.”
“Madison is strong-willed.”
“Don’t make this bigger.”
Why?
Because Caroline was her friend.
Because Madison spent time in her home.
Because she did not want conflict between families.
Then:
“Did you tell Madison anything about Andrew’s grief counseling?”
Melissa cried.
“Not directly.”
“What did you say?”
At dinner once, Caroline complained that Lila “acts fragile.”
Melissa answered:
“She’s had a rough few years. Andrew too. He barely held it together after Sarah died.”
Madison was in the next room.
Listening.
Then another time Melissa said:
“If Andrew thinks Lila caused problems, he’ll panic. He already worries social services will judge him because he works nights.”
Madison heard that too.
She converted adult anxiety into playground threats.
Melissa had not intentionally armed her.
But she had failed the child twice:
through loose talk,
then through biased handling of reports.
She resigned before termination proceedings finished.
Andrew did not speak to her for months.
When he finally did, he said:
“You made Lila think Madison had access to me.”
Melissa cried.
