Chapter 8 - TYLER'S FATHER

Tyler’s father, Mark Dawson, was furious when the school suspended Tyler pending investigation.
He stormed into a meeting.
“My son is nine.”
Valerie heard the echo of every excuse adults used.
Then Mark said:
“He roughhouses.”
Naomi Bell slid three statements across the table.
Different children.
Different weeks.
One said Tyler stood over a smaller boy and said:
“Move or I move you.”
Another:
Tyler hid a child’s backpack in a trash bin.
Another:
he kicked a soccer ball repeatedly at the same child after being told to stop.
Mark stared.
“No one told me all of this.”
Naomi answered:
“Some incidents were handled informally.”
Mark looked toward Hall.
There.
For the first time, a parent who had minimized his own child realized the school had also helped him minimize.
That did not excuse him.
But it changed what he did next.
He stopped saying:
“My son would never.”
He started asking:
“What did he do?”
Then Mark said:
“He roughhouses.”
District investigator Naomi Bell answered:
“He participated in repeated intimidation.”
Mark laughed.
“Intimidation?”
Then they played a clip.
Tyler cornering Lila near lockers.
No sound.
He blocks her path.
She tries left.
He steps left.
Right.
He follows.
Then shoves her books to the ground.
Walks away.
Mark stopped laughing.
Still, he defended.
“Kids do stupid things.”
Naomi said:
“Yes.”
Then:
“Adults decide whether stupid things become patterns.”
Mark looked down.
That sentence landed.
Then he revealed something useful.
Tyler came home once saying Madison gave him “missions.”
Mark thought it was pretend.
He even joked:
“Complete the mission, soldier.”
Valerie felt anger.
Mark looked ashamed.
“I didn’t know.”
No.
But he had rewarded the language.
Then Tyler’s messages showed he was not passive.
He enjoyed power.
He suggested:
hiding Lila’s shoes,
blocking bathroom,
making her kneel for dropped pencils.
Not all happened.
Some did.
Tyler needed consequences.
May you like
But he also needed adults to stop pretending Madison controlled everything.
He made choices too.
