Chapter 2 - THE COLLAPSE

Lila staggered between two rows of desks during reading period.
At first Valerie thought she had tripped over a backpack.
Then Lila’s books fell.
Her breathing turned frantic.
She reached for a desk.
Missed.
Then collapsed.
“LILA!”
Valerie caught her before her head hit the floor.
Students screamed.
Someone shouted:
“Oh my God!”
Valerie lowered Lila carefully.
“Lila, wake up.”
No response.
Clara? no. School nurse later. Valerie called the office.
Then Lila gasped.
Her eyes flew open.
She immediately started sobbing and trying to pull away.
Her cardigan sleeve slid up.
Bruises.
Several.
Dark along the arm.
Valerie went completely still.
“Who did this to you?”
Lila yanked the sleeve down.
“I FELL!”
“Lila—”
“I FELL!”
She curled against a desk.
Valerie knelt.
“Please look at me.”
“I SAID I’M FINE!”
Her fingers shook.
Her eyes kept flicking toward the classroom door.
Valerie followed the gaze.
“Someone is hurting you.”
“No! Stop!”
Then Lila broke.
She grabbed Valerie’s cardigan.
Buried her face against her.
Valerie wrapped both arms around her.
“Who are you so afraid of?”
“PLEASE DON’T MAKE ME SAY IT!”
Then the classroom door opened.
Madison.
Tyler.
Chloe.
They had been sent back from another room after a schedule change.
Lila saw them.
Stopped crying instantly.
Her face drained white.
Her fingers dug into Valerie’s sleeve.
Madison gave her a slow smile.
Tyler grinned.
Chloe looked amused.
Valerie turned.
Concern became anger.
Not shouting.
Not yet.
She stood.
“Madison. Tyler. Chloe. Go to the office.”
Madison blinked.
“Why?”
“Now.”
Tyler rolled his eyes.
“We didn’t do anything.”
Valerie stared.
Interesting answer.
She had not accused them.
Chloe stopped smiling.
Then Madison said calmly:
“Lila lies when she wants attention.”
Valerie looked at her.
“How do you know what Lila says when she wants attention?”
Madison blinked.
Only once.
Then:
“Everyone knows.”
“Who is everyone?”
Madison shrugged.
Tyler shifted his weight.
Chloe stared at the floor.
That was the first moment Valerie saw the hierarchy inside the trio.
Madison answered.
Tyler reinforced.
Chloe watched.
Not equal.
But all participating.
Then Madison added:
“She makes stuff up about us.”
Valerie said:
“I haven’t told you she said anything about you.”
Madison’s smile vanished.
There.
She had stepped ahead of the information available to her.
Valerie wrote down the exact sentence later.
Not because it proved guilt.
Because it showed anticipation.
Then Madison said calmly:
“Lila lies when she wants attention.”
Lila flinched.
Valerie heard it.
So did three other students.
Valerie walked to the classroom phone.
Called the principal.
Then the school nurse.
Then district student services.
She did not ask Lila to name anyone else.
Not in front of them.
Not under pressure.
But when the nurse arrived and led Lila out, Madison watched her leave.
Then whispered:
May you like
“She’s gonna regret that.”
Valerie heard every word.
