Chapter 6 - THE PHONE UNDER MADISON'S BED
District investigators moved quickly once Lila described The List.
Not perfectly.
But quickly.
Parents were contacted.
Phones preserved where appropriate.
Madison’s mother, Caroline, initially refused access to Madison’s device.
Then a family court emergency order? Too much. Better she voluntarily cooperated after being warned school matter serious.
Caroline eventually surrendered an old phone Madison used on Wi-Fi.
The device contained group messages between Madison, Tyler, and Chloe.
Names disguised as emojis.
Lila:
mouse.
One thread:
MADISON:
Mouse cried again lol.
TYLER:
How many points?
MADISON:
3 if she lies tomorrow.
CHLOE:
Make her say she fell.
There.
The phrase.
I fell.
Repeated because they trained it.
Then another:
TYLER:
What if teacher sees bruises
MADISON:
Mom says teachers can't prove anything without witnesses.
Caroline went pale when shown it.
“I never said that.”
Maybe not exactly.
Then:
MADISON:
Aunt M says Lila's dad always believes her.
Aunt M.
Melissa.
Andrew’s sister.
The investigators called Melissa in.
She denied coaching.
She said children overhear things.
Then the phone showed a voice message from Melissa’s kitchen.
Investigators found another recording from the same device.
Madison speaking privately to Chloe.
MADISON:
If Lila tells, Aunt Melissa fixes it.
CHLOE:
How?
MADISON:
She talks to her dad.
CHLOE:
What if teacher knows?
MADISON:
Teachers work for school. Aunt Melissa works for school too.
That was a child’s simplified understanding.
But dangerous enough.
Madison did not need Melissa to say:
I will protect you.
She only needed to observe:
complaint,
adult phone call,
nothing happens.
Pattern became promise.
Then the phone showed a voice message from Melissa’s kitchen.
Adult voices in background.
Caroline:
“Valerie Kincaid is dramatic.”
Melissa:
“She files everything.”
Caroline:
“Good teachers know when kids are just being kids.”
Madison had recorded it accidentally while messaging.
Not direct conspiracy.
But environment.
Then another clip.
Melissa:
“If Lila complains again, I’ll handle Andrew.”
That was worse.
Why handle Andrew instead of the school report?
Melissa answered:
“Because he’s my brother.”
