Chapter 14 - THE FIRST TIME LILA SAYS MADISON'S NAME

Months passed.

The bruises faded.

The fear stayed longer.

Lila still checked doors.

Still avoided the planter beds.

Still asked whether Madison was in the building.

Then one day during counseling, she said the name without whispering.

“Madison pushed me.”

Her counselor nodded.

“What happened next?”

“Tyler blocked the door.”

“And Chloe?”

“Filmed.”

No tears.

Just sequence.

Later she told Valerie the same thing.

Not because Valerie needed evidence anymore.

Because Lila wanted the story to belong to her.

Then Valerie asked:

“Do you want me to say anything?”

Lila thought.

“No.”

Good.

No adult turning disclosure into performance.

At recess, Lila began playing with two new friends.

One day she tripped.

Scraped her knee lightly.

Valerie’s body tensed from across the yard.

Lila stood.

Looked at the scrape.

Then laughed.

“I actually fell!”

Valerie laughed too.

The phrase had changed.

Once:

cover story.

Now:

May you like

truth.

That mattered more than anyone else understood.
