Rachel reduced her workload.
Not quit.
Important.
She negotiated:
no overnight travel for six months,
remote work two days,
fixed school pickup coverage,
backup caregiver list.
Her sister Anna joined the plan.
School counselor.
Pediatric dietitian.
Therapist.
Rachel built structure.
Not because a good mother must sacrifice career.
Because Sophie temporarily needed more.
Then Rachel did something harder.
She apologized to Sophie.
Not:
“Grandma tricked me.”
Instead:
“I should have listened sooner.”
Sophie looked at her.
“Are you mad at Grandma?”
“Yes.”
“Do I have to be?”
Rachel almost said yes.
Then:
“No.”
Good.
Sophie cried.
“I still miss her.”
Rachel hugged her.
“That makes sense.”
This became important later.
Margaret had been telling everyone Rachel would poison Sophie against her.
