Chapter 14 - THE ORDER
The court denied Margaret’s guardianship petition.
Rachel retained custody.
Temporary conditions:
continued nutritional follow-up,
therapy,
court review in ninety days,
structured backup caregiving plan.
Margaret received no unsupervised contact initially.
Not permanent.
The judge explained:
“The goal is Sophie’s safety, not punishment.”
Margaret cried.
Real tears.
She loved Sophie.
That did not erase what she did.
The court referred possible financial exploitation and neglect issues for further investigation.
The trust bank froze any guardianship-related reimbursement requests pending future court order.
Then Judge Hart addressed Rachel.
“You were slow to recognize danger.”
Rachel nodded.
“Yes.”
“You delegated more than was wise.”
“Yes.”
“Do not turn this ruling into proof you did nothing wrong.”
Rachel swallowed.
“I won’t.”
Then the judge addressed Margaret.
“Providing resources to a household does not mean providing nutrition to a child.”
Simple.
Then:
“You used abundance around her while restricting what she could consume.”
Margaret looked down.
That was the core.
Not poverty.
