Chapter 4 - MARGARET'S STORY
Margaret did not panic when CPS called.
She prepared.
That made her dangerous.
She said:
Sophie was refusing food.
Sophie had anxiety.
Rachel worked too much.
Rachel had “effectively abandoned” the child during the week.
Margaret had repeatedly begged Rachel to reduce work hours.
Some of that was true.
Rachel did work long hours.
Sophie had anxiety.
Margaret had complained.
Then Margaret produced receipts.
Thousands in groceries.
“I spent everything Rachel gave me on the household.”
The CPS investigator, Karen Mills, asked:
“For Sophie?”
“For the household that Sophie lived in.”
Careful wording.
Then:
“Did Sophie have access to all food purchased?”
Margaret hesitated.
“She is picky.”
“Was she allowed to eat the steaks?”
“They were for dinner guests.”
“The yogurt?”
“She said she didn’t like it.”
“Fruit?”
“It spoils.”
Karen wrote notes.
Margaret continued:
“Rachel is trying to punish me because I told her she’s neglecting her daughter.”
There.
Counterattack.
Then Margaret produced screenshots.
RACHEL:
Can you handle Sophie this week? I have two late nights.
RACHEL:
I can’t get there before 8.
RACHEL:
Please make sure she eats.
Margaret framed them as:
absent mother pleading for help.
Rachel framed them as:
a parent coordinating care with a willing grandparent.
Both interpretations existed.
Then Margaret said:
“I think Sophie needs stability.”
Karen asked:
“What do you mean?”
Margaret reached into her handbag.
A petition.
TEMPORARY GUARDIANSHIP.
Already drafted.
Karen looked up.
“When did you prepare this?”
Margaret said:
“Before the hospital.”
Rachel learned that two days later.
And finally understood.

Her mother had not started planning after Sophie collapsed.
She had been building toward custody before.
