Chapter 1 - THE DAUGHTER WHO PAID FOR THE CAKE

Claire Bennett bought her own birthday cake.
That should have told her everything.
She was twenty-five.
Blonde.
Organized.
Good job.
Good credit.
Bad boundaries.
She lived in the same large suburban home where she had grown up because two years earlier her father, Robert, told her the family was “temporarily squeezed.”
Temporary became permanent.
Robert was fifty-six and had once earned good money managing regional construction accounts.
Then his company downsized.
He found contract work.
Then less contract work.
Linda, Claire’s mother, had not worked outside the home in years.
Madison was twenty-two.
Younger sister.
Lavender sweaters.
Designer sneakers.
No stable job.
She called herself a content creator.
Her income came in bursts.
Her expenses did not.
Claire started helping with:
electricity,
internet,
groceries.
Then mortgage shortage.
Then Robert’s truck payment.
Then Linda’s insurance.
Then Madison’s phone.
Each request arrived alone.
“Just this month.”
“Until Dad gets paid.”
“Madison needs it for work.”
“You earn more.”
Claire never saw the total.
That was deliberate, though she did not know it yet.
On her twenty-fifth birthday, Claire left work early.
She bought:
a small chocolate cake,
flowers for the dining table,
and ingredients for dinner.
Her mother had promised a family meal.
When Claire walked inside carrying the cake, Madison appeared first.
She grabbed it straight from Claire’s hands.
“What are you doing?”
Madison ignored her.
Blew out the candles herself.
Then shoved the cake back against Claire’s chest.
“Your birthday is ruining MY night.”
Claire froze.
Madison smiled.
Linda entered.
Saw the flowers.
Snatched them.
“Oh, these are pretty.”
Claire thought:
Finally.
Then Linda handed them to Madison.
“She needs them more.”
Madison hugged the flowers and looked directly at Claire.
“Thanks, sis.”
Something hot rose in Claire’s face.
Then Robert came in from the den.
He hung up his phone.
Claire asked:
“Who was that?”
“Restaurant.”
“What restaurant?”
“Your dinner.”
Silence.
“I cancelled it.”
“Why?”
“Madison has plans later.”
Claire stared.
“It’s my birthday.”
Robert shrugged.
Then Claire finally shouted:
“I PAY FOR EVERYTHING!”
Robert looked at her with complete contempt.
“Then pay quietly.”
Claire went still.
May you like
Not hurt.
Finished.
