Chapter 11 - MADISON GETS HER FIRST REAL BILL

The household did not collapse after Claire left.

It shrank.

That was different.

Robert sold his truck.

Bought a used sedan.

Linda cancelled:

premium cable,

meal subscriptions,

salon membership.

The giant grocery budget disappeared.

Madison’s phone line shut off for thirty-six hours.

She called Claire from Linda’s phone.

“You’re insane!”

Claire answered:

“Pay it.”

“I don’t have that kind of money!”

“It’s ninety-eight dollars.”

Silence.

Madison had spent more than that on brunch.

Then:

“You know I need my phone for work.”

“So pay for your work.”

Madison hung up.

Two days later she opened her own plan.

The next month she took a full-time position at Lavender Lane Boutique.

At first she called it temporary.

Then she started earning commission.

Regular paychecks.

Taxes withheld.

Actual schedule.

She hated Saturdays.

She liked money hitting her own account.

Then came her first full month of expenses.

Phone.

Car insurance contribution.

Gas.

Clothes.

Food.

Madison texted Claire:

HOW DID YOU PAY ALL THAT?

Claire stared.

Then replied:

Every month.

Madison:

I mean how did you afford it?

Claire:

I didn’t save much.

Long pause.

Madison:

Oh.

That “oh” was the first time Claire believed Madison had understood anything.

For years Madison had assumed:

Claire earns more = Claire has more.

She never saw what Claire gave up.

No apartment.

No vacations.

Minimal retirement savings.

Old car.

No emergency fund beyond one month.

The stable daughter had been stable because she was standing still.
