Chapter 2 - THEN LET MADISON PAY

Madison dropped onto the couch.

Put Claire’s flowers beside her.

“God, you’re exhausting.”

Linda pointed toward the stairs.

“Go cry somewhere else.”

Claire’s eyes filled.

Then stopped.

Her face changed.

She walked upstairs.

Pulled two suitcases from the closet.

Opened drawers.

Not carefully.

Clothes.

Laptop.

Documents.

Shoes.

Medication.

Linda laughed from downstairs.

“You’ll come crawling back.”

Claire dragged both suitcases down.

Robert watched with the smug expression of a man who believed leverage belonged permanently to him.

Claire stopped in the foyer.

Slowly turned.

Pulled out her phone.

Opened her banking app.

Robert’s expression changed.

Claire tapped the household payment dashboard.

Electric.

Internet.

Streaming.

Grocery card.

Robert truck contribution.

Linda health-premium transfer.

Madison phone.

Household credit card autopay.

Her thumb hovered.

“Then let Madison pay.”

Madison sat upright.

“Wait—WHAT?!”

Claire tapped the first cancellation.

Then the second.

Robert moved toward her.

“Don’t be stupid.”

Claire looked at him.

“I’m done.”

“You live here.”

“Not anymore.”

“You owe this family.”

Claire laughed once.

That sentence had controlled her for years.

Now it sounded absurd.

She dragged the suitcases outside.

Nobody helped.

Nobody asked where she would sleep.

Madison shouted through the doorway:

“You’ll last three days!”

Claire put the bags into her car.

Then drove to her friend Rachel Sloan’s apartment.

On the way, her bank sent confirmation:

AUTOPAY CANCELLED.

Then another.

Then another.

By midnight, seventeen recurring household transfers had been stopped.

Claire added them.

Monthly total:

$6,742.

She stared at the number.

Six thousand seven hundred forty-two dollars.

Every month.

She had never added it before.

Then she began crying.

May you like

Not because she left.

Because she realized how long she had been paying to be treated like she was unwanted.
