Chapter 13 - CHARLOTTE LEARNS WHAT SHE BOUGHT

Charlotte’s relationship with Gavin ended before the divorce did.
She expected freedom.
Instead she got:
legal bills,
public embarrassment,
a damaged professional reputation,
and a man who blamed her for cooperating with investigators.
Gavin said:
“You betrayed me.”
Charlotte answered:
“You lied to me.”
“About what?”
“Everything you owned.”
He laughed.
“So this was about money?”
Charlotte stared.
“No.”
Then:
“But you used money to make yourself look honest.”
That sentence surprised him.
Gavin’s wealth story had supported all his other stories.
He controls the house.
He owns the car.
He funds Sabrina.
He is leaving generously.
He is the adult making decisions.
When those facts collapsed, Charlotte began questioning everything else.
Including why she had enjoyed humiliating Sabrina.
Therapy gave her an answer she hated.
Proximity to Gavin’s status made contempt feel safe.
She believed Sabrina had no leverage.
So cruelty felt costless.
That was not love.
It was hierarchy.
Sabrina later received an apology letter from Charlotte.
It said:
I thought you were weak because you were quiet.
Sabrina stopped there.
Read the line again.
Charlotte continued:
I thought Gavin’s willingness to humiliate you meant he valued me more. I joined in because I wanted that to be true.
No request to meet.
No request for forgiveness.
Sabrina put the letter in a drawer.
Months later she shredded it.
Not dramatically.
She was clearing paperwork.
That felt better than preserving it as evidence of victory.
Charlotte’s understanding belonged to Charlotte.
Sabrina no longer needed it to explain herself.
Charlotte’s therapist asked a question she hated:
“What did you enjoy about humiliating Sabrina?”
Charlotte answered immediately:
“Nothing.”
The therapist waited.
Charlotte started crying.
Then:
“She looked small.”
Silence.
“And?”
“I felt chosen.”
There.
Gavin’s affair had never made Charlotte fully secure.
He still lived with Sabrina.
Still wore his wedding ring.
Still delayed filing.
Charlotte’s cruelty toward Sabrina created a temporary hierarchy:
wife below,
mistress above.
The car keys helped.
So did the red dress.
So did Gavin standing behind her.
Humiliation became proof of status.

That was why Sabrina’s revelation about the car shattered Charlotte so completely.
The object she used as a crown had never belonged to her.
