Chapter 10 - THE ACCOUNT ROBERT SAID WASN'T HIS
During final financial discovery, one unexplained account remained.
$67,000.
Transferred from Daniel’s line of credit to Robert.
Robert claimed repayment of an old family loan.
Daniel could not remember clearly.
Then Robert produced records.
Years earlier, he had loaned Daniel $80,000 for a down payment on the marital house.
Emma had always believed the money came from Daniel’s bonus.
Another lie.
Not theft.
But more false image.
Daniel wanted to look successful without admitting help.
Robert had kept the loan private.
Why?
Daniel asked.
Robert answered:
“You begged me.”
Emma stared.
Daniel’s obsession with appearing in control predated alcohol.
Maybe alcohol fed it.
Maybe it fed alcohol.
Then Robert admitted one mistake.
He had accepted several secret repayments while knowing Emma believed household finances were stable.
He called it loyalty.
Now called it cowardice.
The remaining $67,000 was legitimate repayment.
Emma did not get it back.
Good.
Accounting mattered more than winning every number.
Then Daniel’s employer completed its own review.
He had not stolen company funds.
He had attended work impaired twice.
He had hidden a personal financial conflict involving Harbor & Vine from one internal disclosure.
He received suspension and mandatory monitoring.
Not fired.
Emma expected to feel angry.
Did not.
Consequences did not need to be maximum to be real.
Then Samantha Reed called Emma.
Strange.
She wanted to apologize.
“For what?”
“For knowing he was planning to leave and not telling you.”
Emma paused.
“That wasn’t your job.”
“I know.”
“Then why apologize?”
“Because I liked being the person he confided in.”
There.
Not affair.
Emotional proximity.
Samantha admitted she felt important.
Emma understood more than she wanted.
She said:
“Thank you for saying that.”
No friendship.
No feud.
Enough.
Then Emma learned Daniel had once told Samantha:
“If Emma left first, I’d collapse. So I need to be ready before she does.”
That was why the condo existed.
Not a lover.
An escape route.
