Chapter 12 - THE FIRST TIME DANIEL RELAPSED WITHOUT CALLING EMMA

Six months after divorce, Daniel relapsed.

Emma heard from Robert.

Her body reacted before her mind.

Heart racing.

Need to fix.

Then she stopped.

“Is he safe?”

“Yes.”

“Is he driving?”

“No.”

“Is he with someone?”

“Yes.”

“Then okay.”

Robert sounded surprised.

“That’s it?”

“That’s it.”

He called treatment team.

Not Emma.

Daniel returned to meetings.

No crisis brought them back together.

That was growth for everyone.

A week later, Daniel emailed:

I RELAPSED. I DIDN’T CALL YOU. I THINK THAT’S GOOD EVEN THOUGH THE RELAPSE ISN’T.

Emma stared.

Then replied:

YES.

Simple.

Then Patricia, Emma’s mother, asked if she should invite Daniel to Thanksgiving.

Emma laughed.

“No.”

“He was family.”

“He was.”

“Do you hate him?”

“No.”

“Then why not?”

“Because not hating someone is not an invitation.”

Patricia nodded slowly.

Learning.

Then Emma started dating no one.

Friends assumed trauma.

Maybe.

Mostly she liked quiet.

She took a promotion at work.

Started managing two offices.

Opened her own retirement account.

Read every statement.

Then one evening she received a letter from the insurance company.

Final claim closure.

Case complete.

The burned curtain had become numbers.

Emma filed the letter away.

She kept no photo.

She did not need the fire as identity.

Then Natalie sent a note:

Your diversion requirements are complete.

No conviction after successful completion under the agreed program.

Emma cried.

Not because she had escaped consequences.

Because she had completed them.

Therapy.

Restitution.

Sobriety period.

Community safety course.

Responsibility had an end point.

Shame did not have to be permanent.
