Chapter 13 - THE BOTTLE DANIEL FINALLY BROKE HIMSELF

A year later, Daniel invited Emma to an open recovery anniversary meeting.

She almost refused.

Then decided she wanted to see the person he had become without needing to be part of it.

The meeting was simple.

Coffee.

Folding chairs.

Bad cookies.

Daniel spoke.

“My name is Daniel.”

He described work.

Debt.

Drinking.

Marriage.

He did not name Emma.

Good.

Then:

“I used to think drinking was the problem everyone else used against me. It was actually the tool I used against everything I didn’t want to feel.”

Emma looked down.

Then Daniel said:

“My ex-wife did something dangerous one night. For a long time, I used that as proof that I was the victim and she was the problem.”

Silence.

“I was a victim of that act.”

Emma’s throat tightened.

“And I was also someone who spent years creating fear, secrecy, and instability.”

There.

Both.

After the meeting, Daniel approached.

“Thanks for coming.”

“You did well.”

He smiled.

“Still sounds like performance review.”

“Occupational hazard.”

Then he handed her something.

A sealed miniature whiskey bottle.

Empty.

Emma frowned.

“What is this?”

“The last bottle I had hidden at the old house.”

Her stomach tightened.

“I found it before we sold.”

“Why keep it?”

“I thought someday I’d drink it.”

“And?”

“I emptied it this morning.”

“Why give it to me?”

He thought.

“Bad idea?”

“Yes.”

He laughed.

“Fair.”

Then threw it in the trash himself.

That was better.

Emma watched.

No symbolism forced into her hands.

Then Daniel asked:

“Do you forgive me?”

Emma smiled sadly.

“More than I used to.”

He nodded.

“And you?”

“What?”

“Do you forgive yourself?”

Emma looked away.

Harder.

“I’m working on it.”

May you like

Good.

No miracle.
