Chapter 7 - THE DINNER ROBERT NEVER WANTED DISCLOSED

The failed restaurant investment led somewhere unexpected.
Robert and Daniel had invested with a man named Lucas Gray.
Restaurant:
Harbor & Vine.
Concept:
upscale waterfront dining.
Beautiful plans.
Terrible financing.
Daniel invested $90,000.
Then another $70,000.
Robert invested more.
The project collapsed after Lucas allegedly misrepresented construction costs.
Daniel drank heavily after every investor meeting.
Then one private dinner happened.
Lucas offered Daniel an exit.
Sell his share to another investor at a loss and walk away.
Daniel refused.
Why?
Pride.
He told Robert:
“If Emma sees I lost this much, I’m dead.”
Robert said:
“She won’t kill you.”
Daniel answered:
“Might burn the house.”
Everyone stared at the recovered audio.
The dinner had been recorded by Lucas during a dispute.
Date:
four months before the actual fire.
Emma went cold.
Daniel had used the same image before she ever did it.
Coincidence?
Probably.
A phrase.
Dark joke.
Still eerie.
Then Robert said on the recording:
“Stop making her the excuse. Tell her.”
That surprised Emma.
Robert had not always enabled Daniel.
Daniel replied:
“She already thinks I’m a drunk loser.”
Robert:
“Then prove one part wrong.”
The audio hurt in a different way.
Daniel knew.
He knew Emma’s contempt was growing.
He felt it.
He still hid more.
Then Lucas Gray testified Daniel had arrived drunk to two investor meetings.
Not violent.
Embarrassing.
Robert covered.
Again.
Family protection.
Then Daniel confronted Robert.
“You gave them the audio.”
Robert answered:
“They subpoenaed it.”
“You could have fought.”
“Why?”
Daniel stared.
Robert continued:
“I’m done helping you hide from Emma, banks, or yourself.”
That was the first crack between brothers.
Then Northline transferred the condo.
Not to Daniel.
Sold it.
Profit:
$18,000.
Robert repaid Daniel’s loan principal into marital escrow.
Emma was surprised.
“Why?”
Natalie said:
“Because once hidden, even legitimate deals look poisoned.”
Robert had learned faster than Daniel.
Then Daniel entered inpatient rehab voluntarily after another relapse.
Thirty days.
Emma did not visit.
He wrote letters.
She read none.
Then one arrived through Natalie.
Not a love letter.
A financial disclosure.
Daniel listed every hidden debt he could remember.
Every transfer.
Every account.
At the bottom:
I kept thinking if I solved the money before you saw it, the lie would disappear.
Emma stared.
That was the same logic she had used with fire for about thirty seconds:
If I destroy the symbol, maybe the pain changes.
Both wrong.
Different scale.
Same fantasy.
Then Daniel added:
I don’t expect this to save the marriage. I’m trying to stop saving myself with secrets.
May you like
Emma kept the letter.
Did not answer.
