Chapter 14 - THE FIRE MARSHAL'S LETTER

Two years after the fire, Emma received a letter from the fire marshal’s office.

Routine records retention notice.

The incident report would be archived.

She almost threw it away.

Then read it.

Cause:

intentional ignition of alcohol-contaminated curtain by occupant.

Damage:

limited.

Injuries:

none.

Contributing factors:

intoxication.

domestic conflict.

Plain.

No poetry.

That helped.

The fire had become fact.

Not destiny.

Then Emma thought about the trailer version of her own memory.

Bottle flying.

Lighter.

Daniel screaming.

For a long time, she had remembered the scene as the moment she finally stopped being powerless.

Wrong.

She had been most powerless then.

Drunk.

Desperate.

Dangerous.

The real power came later.

Admitting it.

Leaving.

Reading accounts.

Paying restitution.

Saying no when Daniel’s relapse tried to recruit her.

Letting him recover without becoming his reward.

Then she took the fire report to therapy.

Her therapist asked:

“What do you feel?”

Emma said:

“Embarrassed.”

“What else?”

“Sad.”

“What else?”

“Grateful it didn’t become worse.”

Good.

That was enough.

Then she met Robert for coffee by accident.

Same café.

He asked if she hated him.

“No.”

“Daniel said I enabled him.”

“You did.”

Robert nodded.

“I thought keeping him from consequences was keeping him alive.”

Emma looked at him.

“That’s what I thought too.”

They sat in shared discomfort.

Then Robert said:

“He’s sober eleven months.”

“Good.”

“You don’t ask.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because his sobriety is not my project.”

Robert nodded slowly.

“That sentence should be printed on our family wall.”

May you like

Emma laughed.

Then left.
