Chapter 2 - SIGN IT

Daniel slammed the confession onto the table.

The paper slid toward Claire.

He forced the pen into her hand.

Not her purse pen.

A black executive pen from the kitchen desk.

Claire noticed the shape.

Same model.

Same silver clip.

Her pulse jumped.

Had Lorraine taken hers out?

Or was this hers?

She turned it in her fingers.

Tiny ridge on the side.

Record button.

Yes.

Daniel screamed:

“SIGN IT! YOU WERE DRIVING!”

Claire jerked her hand back.

“YOU HIT THAT MAN!”

Lorraine grabbed her arm.

“Protect your husband!”

Claire looked at her.

“Protect him from what? Killing someone?”

Daniel got inches from Claire’s face.

“I drove. YOU take the blame.”

Claire started crying.

Not entirely performance.

But enough.

Her thumb moved along the pen.

Found the button.

Pressed.

A tiny vibration.

Good.

Recording.

She lowered her head.

Made her shoulders shake.

Then asked:

“And if he dies?”

Daniel snapped:

“Then YOU go down for it!”

Lorraine smirked.

“Now sign.”

Claire stared at the paper.

Then at Daniel.

“What happens to me?”

Daniel exhaled impatiently.

“Probably probation.”

“You don’t know that.”

“The police can’t prove anything worse.”

Lorraine added:

“You have no record. You weren’t drinking.”

Claire looked up.

Daniel had been drinking.

That was why they needed her.

Then Daniel said something that made the plan larger.

He also forced Claire to rehearse the statement aloud.

Lorraine corrected details.

“No, say you were upset.”

Claire stared.

“Why?”

“Because people remember emotional women.”

Daniel gave his mother a warning look.

Too late.

Claire stored the sentence mentally.

Lorraine continued:

“You left the charity dinner angry. You drove too fast. The man stepped out. You panicked.”

A complete character arc manufactured in less than five minutes.

Claire said:

“I took a rideshare home.”

Lorraine smiled.

“Then you’ll say you don’t remember ordering it.”

Claire looked at her.

The sophistication frightened her.

They were not simply asking Claire to lie.

They were pre-writing explanations for every contradiction they expected police to find.

Then Daniel said something that made the plan larger.

“And my license can’t survive this.”

Claire frowned.

“Why?”

He looked away.

Lorraine answered too late.

“Because of the old suspension.”

Claire stared.

“What suspension?”

Daniel had never told her.

Then he shouted:

“SIGN.”

Claire did.

Her name.

Full.

Trembling.

Then Lorraine took the paper immediately.

Daniel reached for the pen.

Claire held it one second longer.

Enough to press the button again.

Stop recording.

Then released it.

Lorraine folded the confession into her handbag.

Daniel said:

“We go to the station in the morning.”

Claire looked at him.

“Why not now?”

“Because you’re in shock.”

No.

Because they needed time.

Then Lorraine said:

“You’ll say you panicked and came home.”

Claire realized they had already abandoned the car.

Police would find it.

Maybe they already had.

Then Daniel added:

“You hit him near the old quarry entrance.”

Claire stared.

“How do you know where I hit him if I was driving?”

Daniel froze.

Lorraine stepped between them.

“That’s enough.”

Claire lowered her eyes again.

Inside, she thought:

I have you.

She believed the pen held everything.

May you like

That belief carried her through the night.

It was the first trap.
