Chapter 8 - THE DRIVER WHO REMEMBERED CLAIRE

The rideshare driver was named Emily Carson.

She remembered Claire clearly.

Why?

Claire had cried in the back seat.

Not loudly.

Quietly.

Emily asked if she was okay.

Claire said:

“My husband embarrassed me at dinner.”

Truth.

Nothing dramatic.

Emily dropped Claire at home at 11:21.

Building door camera showed Claire entering.

Then hallway camera showed her entering the condo at 11:23.

She did not leave again before Daniel arrived at 11:47.

Independent.

Clean.

Harris looked at Claire.

“You could not have been driving the SUV at 10:52.”

“No.”

“So why sign?”

Claire started crying.

Because Daniel threatened.

Because Lorraine grabbed her.

Because the pen.

The useless pen.

Then Harris asked something harder.

“Why didn’t you tell us immediately before signing anything?”

Claire looked down.

Fear made people do stupid things.

Marriage made some forms of fear feel private.

She said:

“I thought if I had the recording, I could prove everything without making them angrier first.”

Harris nodded slowly.

Not approval.

Understanding.

Then he said:

“Evidence you think exists is not protection.”

Claire looked at the empty pen.

She knew.

Then police obtained a search warrant for Daniel’s office and phone.

They found no missing microSD card.

Not yet.

But they found a photo.

Taken two days before the crash.

Claire’s recording pen disassembled on Daniel’s desk.

No card visible.

Timestamp:

2:14 a.m.

Daniel had photographed it.

Why?

His attorney said curiosity.

May you like

Claire laughed.

Now the silent pen had a story.
