Chapter 9 - THE CARD LORRAINE THREW AWAY

The microSD card was eventually found in Lorraine’s garage trash bin.
Not through miracle.
Through a receipt.
Lorraine bought a small electronics toolkit the afternoon before the crash.
Then investigators searched garbage retained under warrant? Trash collection had not occurred because police moved quickly. In a sealed household trash bag, technicians found:
A cracked microSD card.
Serial batch matched the brand Claire used.
Could data be recovered?
Partially.
Not the crash-night recording.
The card had been physically damaged earlier.
But older files remained.
One audio clip from six months before.
Daniel:
“You keep recordings because you want leverage.”
Claire:
“I keep them because you scare me.”
Then Lorraine’s voice in the background:
“Take the card out next time.”
Claire froze.
Date:
six months earlier.
So Lorraine had known too.
Then another later recording:
Daniel:
“She still carries that stupid pen.”
Lorraine:
“Let her.”
Daniel:
“Why?”
Lorraine:
“People behave differently when they think they’re protected.”
There.
That line broke Claire.
They had deliberately allowed her to keep the recording pen.
Not because they forgot.
Because false confidence made her predictable.
Then Harris said:
“So they expected you to record someday.”
“Yes.”
“And removed the memory card before the confession.”
Likely.
Then the most vicious possibility:
The forensic technician also found partial fingerprint smearing inside the pen barrel.
Too degraded to identify conclusively.
But the plastic retaining clip had fresh tool marks.
Someone had opened it with a miniature screwdriver recently.
Claire never used tools on the pen.
Lorraine had purchased an electronics kit.
Daniel had photographed the pen disassembled.
The prosecution did not need to prove which hand removed the card.
Conspiracy did not require perfect division of labor.
Still, Claire wanted to know.
Emotion demanded a culprit even when law did not.
Maya warned her:
“You may never know which one physically removed it.”
Claire hated that.
Then understood something.
They both knew.
That was enough.
Then the most vicious possibility:
Daniel handed Claire the pen because he knew it was dead.
Not accidentally same model.
The exact pen.
Claire’s.
May you like
He had taken it from her purse earlier and placed it on the kitchen desk.
The trap was complete.
