Chapter 6 - THE EMAIL CLAIRE NEVER SENT
The meeting request came from Claire’s personal email.
Sent at 7:14 p.m. two days before the crash.
Claire did not send it.
Could Daniel access her account?
Yes.
They shared an old household password manager.
Then Claire changed her passwords months earlier.
Daniel complained.
Still, one tablet in the Bennett house remained logged into her email.
Kitchen tablet.
Daniel used it for recipes and streaming.
Forensics found the calendar invite originated from that device.
Daniel’s account profile was active at the time.
Not absolute proof he typed it.
Lorraine had access too.
But stronger.
Then the message itself:
Marcus, I found the old subcontractor statements. Daniel doesn’t know. Meet me Thursday. We need to do this quietly.
Claire stared.
“That doesn’t sound like me.”
Harris said:
“It sounds enough like you.”
That was the problem.
Then Marcus replied:
Finally. Bring whatever you have.
So Marcus expected Claire to expose Daniel.
Daniel knew.
Or somebody did.
Then Maya asked:
“Why not just meet Marcus and threaten him? Why hit him?”
Harris answered:
“We don’t know that Daniel intended to.”
Important.
Maybe Marcus stepped into the road.
Maybe Daniel saw him late.
Maybe Daniel went to confront him and the collision happened during panic.
Do not outrun evidence.
Then Marcus regained consciousness briefly.
Before he did, Claire learned more about the quarry road.
It was not random.
Marcus had used the lot before for private meetings with subcontractors because cell reception was poor and the area emptied after dark.
Daniel knew that.
The quarry entrance also sat outside the normal route from the charity dinner to the Bennett home.
Daniel had to turn off the main road intentionally to get there.
His lawyer later argued he went because Marcus requested a meeting.
But Marcus’s calendar showed Claire’s name.
Daniel’s presence therefore needed explanation.
If he intercepted Marcus after discovering the fake Claire invitation, why not tell police?
Because he had left the scene.
Every answer created another question.
Then Marcus regained consciousness briefly.
Enough for a short interview.
He said one word when Harris asked who drove.
“Dan.”
Then lost consciousness again.
Daniel’s lawyer attacked reliability.
Medication.
Head injury.
Partial name.
Could mean Daniel.
Could mean someone else.
Still.
Claire cried when she heard.

Because Marcus was alive enough to remember fear.
