Chapter 14 - CLAIRE’S LAST LETTER
The final sealed letter from Claire arrived after estate litigation ended.
Addressed to Emma.
Emma waited six months before reading it.
Inside:
I failed you by believing delay was protection.
Emma stopped.
Claire admitted discovering Nathan was alive when Emma was twelve.
Edward had lied.
Claire confronted him.
He threatened to expose an old security-clearance investigation involving Nathan.
Claire believed contact might destroy him.
So she stayed silent.
Years later she learned the investigation had already closed with no wrongdoing.
Still she waited.
Shame.
Then Emma married Michael.
Claire disliked him but feared controlling Emma’s choice the way Edward controlled hers.
So she overcorrected.
Said too little.
Intervened too late.
I kept calling silence respect because I was afraid you would reject me if I told you how much I had hidden.
Emma cried.
Then one sentence:
Please do not make me innocent after I die.
That became Emma’s favorite line.
She did not make Claire a villain.
She did not make her a saint.
She told Hayes.
