Chapter 19 - MICHAEL’S PAROLE LETTER

Years later, Michael became eligible for a parole-related review on portions of his sentence structure, though substantial confinement remained.

He wrote Emma.

Not romantic.

Not apologetic enough.

He said he had changed.

Accepted “some responsibility.”

Blamed Ashley less.

Blamed stress less.

Still avoided the central sentence.

I pushed you.

Emma’s attorney asked whether she wanted to submit opposition.

Emma did.

One page.

She did not demand maximum punishment.

She wrote:

My position is not based on revenge. Michael still describes intentional violence as something that happened around him rather than something he chose. Until he can state plainly what he did, I do not believe his risk has meaningfully changed.

The board denied early release.

Emma filed the letter away.

Then went to Noah’s soccer game.

Life continued.

That was victory too.
