Chapter 16 - ASHLEY’S LETTER

Ashley wrote from prison.
Emma almost threw the letter away.
Then kept it unopened for a year.
Eventually she read.
Ashley did not ask forgiveness.
Good.
She described envy.
Emma had money.
Marriage.
Status.
Pregnancy.
Ashley had spent years thinking Emma’s life was effortless.
Michael encouraged that resentment.
Told Ashley Emma was cold.
Controlling.
Privileged.
Then slowly made Ashley feel morally entitled to take pieces.
First affection.
Then money.
Then corporate access.
By the time Michael suggested frightening Emma into silence, Ashley had crossed so many smaller lines the next one felt less impossible.

Emma folded the letter.
Kept it.

Understanding was not reconciliation.
