Chapter 4 - THE CHILD COLONEL HAYES THOUGHT WAS DEAD

Nathan Hayes was twenty-nine when Claire Walker became pregnant.

He was a young Army captain.

Claire was the daughter of Edward Walker, a powerful defense contractor who considered soldiers useful and penniless officers unsuitable husbands.

Claire and Nathan planned to marry anyway.

Then Nathan deployed overseas.

Three months later, Edward Walker sent him a letter.

Claire had gone into premature labor.

The baby had died.

Claire wanted no further contact.

Nathan believed it.

Why wouldn’t he?

The letter contained details only the family knew.

A hospital.

A physician.

A funeral-home reference.

Nathan wrote Claire fourteen times.

No reply.

Then Claire married another man two years later.

Nathan eventually stopped writing.

Emma listened from the hospital bed.

“My mother never mentioned you.”

“I know.”

“She told me my biological father died overseas.”

Hayes nodded.

“I learned that three months ago.”

“How?”

“Your mother left me a letter.”

Emma stared.

Claire had died eight months earlier from pancreatic cancer.

Her estate remained under administration.

Hayes reached into his jacket.

Not the letter itself.

A copy.

Julia checked it first.

Then handed it to Emma.

Claire’s handwriting.

Emma recognized it immediately.

Nathan,

If this reaches you, then I failed to become brave enough while I was alive. Emma lived. My father lied to both of us.

Emma stopped.

Her hands shook.

She could not continue.

Hayes did.

Claire discovered the deception years later.

By then Nathan had built another life.

Claire was married.

Edward threatened to destroy Nathan’s military career through political connections if she contacted him.

Was that threat realistic?

Maybe.

Claire believed it.

Then fear became delay.

Delay became shame.

Years passed.

“I’m your father?”

Emma whispered.

Hayes looked directly at her.

“Yes.”

She began crying.

Not reunion tears.

Anger.

“You knew for three months?”

“I found out three months ago.”

“And you didn’t call?”

“I tried.”

“No, you didn’t.”

“Your attorney wouldn’t release contact information because your mother’s letter was part of contested estate material.”

“I’m not hidden.”

“I know.”

Hayes looked ashamed.

“I was afraid.”

Emma laughed bitterly.

“The Army colonel was afraid to call me?”

“Yes.”

“Of what?”

“You telling me I was twenty-nine years too late.”

Emma looked away.

No easy embrace.

No miraculous father.

Just another adult who had allowed fear to grow into silence.

Then Julia interrupted.

“There’s more in Claire’s letter.”

Emma turned.

Julia placed another page on the table.

Claire warned Nathan that after her death, someone might attempt to manipulate Emma’s inheritance.

Specifically:

Do not trust any document Michael presents regarding Walker voting shares.

Emma’s blood went cold.

“My mother knew.”

Julia nodded.

“Apparently she suspected something.”

May you like

Hayes added:

“And that is why I was looking for you before the mountain.”
