Michael was arrested on attempted-murder charges.
He did not confess.
He did not panic.

Their theory was immediate.
Emma slipped.
Ashley lied to save herself from financial crimes.
The mountain conditions made perception unreliable.
Emma was traumatized, medicated, and in labor when she accused Michael.
And Colonel Hayes?
Emotionally compromised.
A newly discovered biological father desperate to become heroic.

The family court deferred contact pending risk evaluation.
Michael’s criminal judge issued broader restrictions.
But Michael’s strategy was clear.
Do not behave like a fleeing killer.

Then Walker Advanced Systems became another battlefield.
Michael had spent years cultivating board allies.
He argued Emma was making reckless corporate accusations while recovering from trauma.
Two directors supported temporary independent control of her voting shares.
Emma surprised them.
She agreed.

Michael lost his argument.
He had expected Emma to cling to control.
Instead she removed the conflict.
Hayes smiled when Julia told him.

Emma looked at him.
“I grew up around people who used control as love.”
Hayes’s face fell.
She regretted it slightly.
Not enough to retract it.
He had been absent.
Even if deceived initially, he had still waited three months after learning the truth.
Relationships required accountability too.
Then forensic auditors found Michael’s shell companies.
Not $6.2 million.
$9.4 million.
Some money had been returned disguised as loans.
Others funded property Ashley used.
Michael had motive beyond inheritance.
Emma was about to expose theft.
Then investigators found an insurance policy.

On Emma.
Purchased eleven months earlier.

He claimed it was ordinary estate planning.

Then one document made Julia go silent.

“That one is real.”
Julia looked up.
“What?”
“I signed it.”
