Chapter 8 - THE DOCUMENT EMMA REALLY SIGNED

Emma hated herself for the insurance form.
Julia stopped her.
“You signed a document. That does not authorize murder.”
“I should have read it.”
“Yes.”
Emma looked surprised.
Julia continued:
“You should have read it. That is your mistake.”
She tapped the file.
“Michael’s choices remain Michael’s.”
Specific blame.
Emma needed that.
She had spent years allowing Michael to handle financial paperwork because he was “better with details.”
He cultivated that dependence.
But Emma also chose convenience.
Both truths.
The insurance policy alone proved nothing sinister.
Wealthy couples carried large policies.
The suspicious part was timing.
Michael increased coverage shortly after learning Claire’s trust might release shares upon childbirth.
Then he changed his own estate plan.
If Emma died and Michael later died, Ashley would receive a substantial portion of his estate.
Ashley claimed she never knew.
Forensic emails suggested otherwise.
Michael wrote:
Once the Walker mess is settled, we stop hiding.
Ashley replied:
Don’t promise me a future you don’t control.
Not murder language.
But revealing.
Then Emma discovered her mother had known about the affair.
Claire’s final estate files contained a private-investigator report.
Photos.
Hotel entries.
Corporate payments.
Why had Claire not told Emma?
A handwritten note answered:
Emma is pregnant. I need proof before I destroy her marriage.
Emma cried.
Another person waiting for certainty while harm grew.
Hayes read the note.
“Claire always thought she could control timing.”
“You knew that?”
“Yes.”
Emma looked at him.
“You loved her?”
“I did.”
“Even after everything?”
Hayes thought.
“I loved who she was. I also spent years angry at what I thought she did.”
Then:
“Now I’m angry at what she actually did.”
That honesty surprised Emma.
No saint-making.
Claire had been manipulated.
Then became complicit in silence.
Hayes had been deceived.
Then became afraid.
Everyone had missed opportunities.

Emma did not want Noah raised inside legends.
Only truth.
