Chapter 12 - CHRISTINE’S PRIVATE OFFER
Laura was arrested for possession of an unapproved controlled compound and suspected child endangerment.
Miriam secured bail, but the family judge suspended all contact with Emma. Even video calls stopped.
For three days, Laura knew her daughter only through hospital portal entries that Ethan controlled. He posted photographs of Emma smiling beside Vera and Christine. Captions described “healing in a peaceful home.”
Laura could not sleep.
On the fourth night, Christine entered Rosa’s apartment without knocking.
She wore pearls, a gray coat, and the same expression she had worn while Laura knelt beside the coffee table.
Rosa reached for her phone. Christine placed both hands where they could be seen.
“If I wanted police here, they would already be here.”
Miriam joined by speakerphone. Laura allowed Christine to sit.
“Ethan planted the vial,” Christine said. “He took it from my cabinet.”
“The cabinet you used to drug Emma?” Laura asked.
Christine’s face tightened. “He told me the drops were an immune treatment. Emma had been ill repeatedly. I believed him.”
“After she stopped breathing, you still helped blame me.”
“By then, telling the truth implicated me.”
At last, a motive stripped of pretense.
Christine removed a memory card from the hollow base of her teacup. “This came from the blanket recorder. Vera found the device and gave it to Ethan. I kept the card.”
“Why send me the broken recorder and cabinet number?”
“Because Ethan planned to make me the sole source of the drug if anything went wrong.”
Christine wanted immunity from criminal prosecution, preservation of her house, and supervised access to Emma. In exchange, she would authenticate the recording and surrender the original red bottle.
Laura wanted to refuse. Miriam stopped her.
“We can negotiate terms,” the attorney said. “We cannot grant immunity.”
Christine left the card on the table.
It appeared blank.
A forensic technician recovered only fragments: Ethan saying “half a dropper,” Vera warning “the blood test,” Christine asking “what if she wakes up,” and Emma crying for her mother.
It was horrifying but incomplete.
At sunrise, detectives arrived with another warrant.
Christine had reported that Laura threatened to fabricate evidence unless she lied about Ethan. She produced an audio recording of their meeting—edited to remove her admissions.
The memory card she surrendered was now described as Laura’s manufactured device.
Christine had offered help only to learn what Laura already knew.

As police escorted Laura for questioning, Miriam received notice that Ethan had scheduled an emergency trust vote for the following day.
If Laura remained under criminal investigation, he could seize control without her signature.
