Chapter 17 - THE LAST THING HE COULD TAKE

Ethan called from Laura’s stolen phone.

Emma cried somewhere behind him.

“Withdraw the recording,” he said. “Restore my trust authority. Tell the court this was a misunderstanding.”

Laura’s terror rose so fast that the room blurred.

Miriam gripped her hand. Federal agents traced the call while Laura kept him talking.

“Is Emma hurt?”

“She is with her father.”

“You drugged her.”

“Christine did.”

“You ordered it.”

“You made it necessary.”

Even now, responsibility was a country Ethan refused to enter.

He sent a video. Emma sat strapped into her car seat inside a parked SUV, frightened but awake. Through the rear window, Laura saw white fencing and a blue water tower.

Rosa recognized the location: an abandoned Ellison research campus thirty miles north, where David had first shut down E17-B.

Agents surrounded the property. Ethan carried Emma into a laboratory and locked the doors. He threatened to expose a freezer of unstable compounds if anyone entered, but a former safety engineer provided an underground utility route.

Laura was ordered to remain outside.

She heard Emma screaming for her through the open call and stepped toward the building anyway.

“I’m here, bug,” she said into the phone. “Mommy is right outside.”

“You always turn her against me,” Ethan said.

“She is two. She knows who makes her feel safe.”

His breathing changed.

“Apologize,” he demanded.

The word brought back the living room, Vera’s hand, Emma’s fever, Christine’s teacup.

“For what?”

“For humiliating me. For choosing your father’s company over your husband. For making me become this.”

Laura spoke with a calm she did not feel. “I will never apologize for protecting our child from you.”

Agents entered through the utility corridor. Ethan heard them and moved toward the rear door. Emma cried louder.

“Put her down,” Laura begged. “Whatever happens to you, let her walk out.”

For one second, the phone carried only his breath.

Then Emma’s voice said, “Daddy, no red.”

Something in that small sentence stopped him.

He set her on the floor.

Agents reached the laboratory. Ethan was arrested without anyone being injured. Emma ran through the corridor wrapped in a silver emergency blanket.

Laura dropped to her knees and caught her.

The child was safe.

Ethan looked back as officers led him away. He seemed less like the terrifying man who controlled rooms and more like what he had always been beneath the suit: someone who mistook possession for love and obedience for respect.

“Laura,” he called, as though she might still rescue him from consequence.

She held Emma tighter and turned away.
