Chapter 13 - THE SOUND BETWEEN THE WORDS

Christine’s edited recording nearly worked.

Nearly.

The apartment’s old radiator clicked every forty-seven seconds. On Christine’s version, two clicks were twelve seconds apart, proving she had removed sections. More importantly, Rosa’s smart doorbell captured the entire meeting through the open interior door. The sound was poor, but it preserved Christine’s demand for immunity.

Police released Laura without charge.

The planted vial remained harder to defeat. Then the forensic technician found microscopic fibers under its cap matching the insulation in Christine’s demolished cabinet. Warehouse footage showed the third vial entering the red case. It never showed Laura near it.

The trust vote was postponed for forty-eight hours.

Ethan’s control began to slip.

He moved Emma from Christine’s mansion to a private pediatric clinic owned by an Ellison subsidiary. He claimed photographers threatened the child’s privacy. The court approved the transfer before Miriam could object.

Dr. Shah was denied access.

Laura drove to the clinic and remained outside the gates all night. She did not trespass. She did not shout. She sat beneath a streetlight holding Emma’s spare blanket, making sure every arriving employee saw a mother waiting.

At 2:20 a.m., Vera came out alone.

Her black dress was gone. She wore scrubs beneath Ethan’s coat, and fear had erased her glamour.

“Emma’s fever is back,” she said.

Laura stood. “Call an ambulance.”

“Ethan won’t allow a transfer.”

“Then why are you telling me?”

Vera looked toward the security booth. “Because Christine lied. She gave the first dose, but Ethan ordered a second at the hospital to keep the compound detectable. Dr. Mercer administered it through Emma’s IV before he left the country.”

Laura’s knees weakened. “You knew.”

“I knew about the plan to make you look careless. I thought the amount was harmless.”

“There is no harmless amount when the victim is two.”

Vera flinched.

“Get me inside,” Laura said.

“If Ethan finds out I helped you, he will destroy me.”

“He already will. You’re simply the last person to understand it.”

Vera used her compliance badge. Laura reached Emma’s room and found her burning with fever while a nurse prepared an unlabeled syringe.

Laura pulled the emergency alarm.

The clinic flooded with staff. Vera ordered the drug secured. An ambulance transported Emma to St. Anne’s over Ethan’s shouted objections.

This time, chain of custody remained intact.

The syringe contained E17-B.

But when regulators asked who ordered it, the electronic authorization bore Vera Fontaine’s credential.

Ethan had made his mistress the next mother he intended to blame.
