Chapter 15 - THE TEACUP THAT NEVER BROKE

Christine disappeared before police could search her home.
Her car was found at the airport, but no record showed her boarding a flight. Ethan claimed he did not know where she was. Investigators doubted him.
The original red bottle vanished with her.
Without Christine, proving David’s poisoning remained difficult. Vera’s testimony established only that Christine poured a drink, not what it contained. The preliminary death certificate raised suspicion but could not identify a substance after cremation.
Then Rosa remembered the teacup.
Christine carried the same porcelain cup throughout the day of the slap. She brought it to the hospital, the custody hearing, and Laura’s apartment. A hairline gold repair circled its base.
“She never lets staff wash it,” Rosa said. “She takes it to her room.”
The cup was not sentiment. It was storage.
Investigators searched the mansion and found an empty presentation box shaped for a teacup. The cup itself was gone. Security footage showed Christine leaving through a garden gate carrying only a handbag.
Miriam traced the manufacturer. The cup had a removable double wall designed for keeping tea warm. It could conceal a vial, memory card, or folded paper.
Ethan called Laura from a blocked number.
“Christine wants safe passage,” he said.
“You’re with her.”
“I’m trying to keep my mother alive. Vera’s associates are looking for her.”
Vera had no associates. Ethan was constructing another lie.
“Let me speak to Christine.”
His mother’s voice came faintly. “Laura, I made mistakes. We should settle this as a family.”
“Where is the red bottle?”
Silence.
“Where is the teacup?”
Christine inhaled sharply.
Ethan ended the call.
The trace led investigators to an Ellison-owned lake property. Laura was told to remain away, but Christine demanded to speak with her before surrendering.
At the boathouse, Ethan stood behind his mother. His wedding ring was gone. Christine clutched the porcelain cup with both hands.
She looked smaller without the mansion around her.
“Give me the trust proxy,” Ethan said, “and she gives you everything.”
“You no longer have Emma to trade, so you’re trading your mother.”
Christine finally understood how completely her son had abandoned her. She unscrewed the cup’s base.
Inside were the original red vial and the missing memory card.
Ethan lunged.
Christine dropped the cup.
Porcelain shattered across the floor, but Laura caught the vial before it rolled into the lake.
Ethan ran through the rear door as federal agents entered from the road.

The memory card remained beneath Christine’s shoe.
And this time, its full recording was intact.
